Job Search Strategies for International Students in Especially Challenging Times
Vera V. Chapman, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, GCDF, is a Career Advisor at Colgate University’s Center for Career Services where she focuses on helping students and alumni navigate career uncertainty – especially in the fields of creative communications and the arts. As Associate Director of Career Development at the same institution for the three years prior, Vera led a team of six career advisors and created a trademarked career development model, EMBARC, to guide Colgate’s career advising process. Though leadership had its own reward, Vera’s true calling is impacting individuals while they are “in the fog” of navigating career uncertainty. As a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC MS), National Certified Counselor (NCC), and Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF-I), she considers it her life’s work to help her clients discover and celebrate their unique selves while building bridges to meaningful lives that are of value to the world.
Originally from South Africa, Dr. Chapman’s research focuses on the psychosocial and career development of students who pursue international education, along with best practices for colleges and universities to foster such development. She serves as Co-Chair of the National Career Development Association’s (NCDA) Global Connections Committee, Reviewer for the Journal of Career Development, Associate Editor of the Journal of International Students, and Field Editor of NCDA’s Career Convergence web magazine. Vera holds a M.Ed in Mental Health Counseling and Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration – both from the University of Mississippi.
WEBINAR DESCRIPTION: International students face significant challenges and uncertainties in gaining employment within the United States – especially in light of recent legislative action. In this webinar, Vera will share strategies to help move international students forward in their career goals despite these challenges by covering such topics as: choosing appropriate and feasible opportunities, leveraging unique strengths in applications and interviews, employment eligibility and disclosing visa status, effective networking, engaging beyond the classroom, and population-specific resources and programs.
